About us - intro

Founded in 1975, the Association des microbiologistes du Québec (AMQ) is a non-profit professional organization established under Part III of the Companies Act (C-38). It is the only officially recognized association of scientific microbiologists in Québec and the second largest in Canada, with a growing membership of over 500 professionals across various microbiology specialties.

Our mission is to advocate for the interests of Québec’s microbiologists and to promote the professional practice of microbiology, thereby contributing to the protection of public health and the advancement of this essential scientific discipline.

Microbiologists are highly qualified applied science professionals, specializing in microorganisms and their interactions. Practicing in this field requires a bachelor’s degree in microbiology (B.Sc.) or an equivalent university qualification. Microbiology is a broad discipline that includes fields such as agri-food, molecular biology, biopharmaceuticals, clinical and public health, industrial, and environmental microbiology.

Microbiologists play a vital role in society. They work in private companies, government and para-government agencies, research centers, academic institutions, diagnostic laboratories, and consulting firms. Their roles include analysts, project managers, laboratory supervisors, and other key positions contributing to public safety and scientific innovation.
